Advanced Do Registered Nurse (APRN) Requirements

"Advanced Practice Registered Nurse" (APRN) is an umbrella title for Registered Nurses who are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) or Nurse Practitioners (NP). Completion of an advanced formal education program is required for recognition to practice in any of the following categories.

Before practicing equally an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in North Carolina, you must (i) hold a N Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) license or another Compact State Registered Nurse license which is valid for practice in North Carolina and (ii) submit an application and obtain North Carolina approval or recognition to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) or Nurse Practitioners (NP).

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

Education: Completion of a Master'southward in Nursing or related field and graduate level midwifery program.

Who Regulates: Midwifery Articulation Commission

Certification Requirements: Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. Mandatory national certification examination, standing education and re-certification.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

Education: Completion of Master's of Science in Nursing or some other appropriate Principal's caste program and graduate level anesthesia programme.

Who Regulates: Board of Nursing

Certification Requirements: Certified by the National Board of Certification and Re-certification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Education: Completion of Master's or higher degree in nursing or Post-Master'due south certificate in nursing, with clinical specialization and preparation for avant-garde part performance in areas such every bit mental health, neonatology, gerontology, cardiology, oncology or community. Recognition every bit a CNS by the NC Lath of Nursing (NCBON) is required in the State.

  3. American Association of Critical Care Nurses Certification Corporation (AACN).
  4. National Certification Corporation of the Obstetric Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing Specialties (NCC).
  5. Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
